Wind Down Weekend

Are you looking for a great family activity for the weekend?  Well now that it's summer you should head over here and see if you have any flea markets near you.  It's a great way to spend the day and you don't even have to have a bunch of cash on hand to have a great time.  Just be sure to wear sunblock and take yourself a drink or two (and maybe a snack) so you don't have to spend all of your money on food and drinks.

Funky Friday

Sticking with our "shaving" theme this week we came up with an interesting idea for today.
Don't just throw away those pencil shavings, they can become a great staple in everyone's craft supply bin.  Here are just a few of the ways they could be used.
Collages- Take any type of pencil shaving (colored, designed, or plain yellow) and use them for a collage.  Put down the glue any way you like and sprinkle the shavings over it (kinda like glitter).
Flowers- Did you ever notice how the wider pencil shavings tend to curl up when you sharpen the pencils?  Take those and make them into flowers for your kids art projects.
People- Do your kids like making pictures of people?  If so skinny pencil shavings work really well for hair or clothing for their people.
Pretend Play- If your kiddos like playing with small plastic animals (like Breyer horses) the pencil shavings would make great bedding for in the stalls.

What other uses can you think of?

Bic Soleil Savvy

Mommy in PA says:  Last week I received an exciting package in the mail...my Bic Soleil Savvy from my newest BzzCampaign.  To find out how you too can become a BzzAgent just head over here and check it out.

Upon first glimpse I noticed that this wasn't your ordinary disposable razor.  Instead of getting multiple disposable razors in the package, you get one handle and four replacement blades.  I also notice that the handle is made out of a pink glittery plastic with a rubber grip design.  There is no mistaking that this is a woman's razor.

Opening the package was pretty easy with the perforations on the back.  Now that I have it open I notice that each refill comes with it's own plastic cover that slides over the blade from the one side.  This is much safer than the ones that you have to click on over the front of the blade.  I also liked that all of the refill covers were attached together in the package but when you need to put on a new one they easily snap apart from each other.

Ok, so now for the performance aspect.  The Bic Soleil Savvy has three flexible blades, a pivoting head, and lubricating strips with vitamin E.  Other than the one nick I got when shaving my underarms I was totally happy with the results.  The combination of the three blades and the vitamin E strips really did the job.  My legs were super smooth (it kinda felt like it left an oily residue on them at first but then the feeling went away and they were just smooth).  The rubber grip handle really did make it easier to control the razor and it looks nice too.

I am very happy with the results but I'm not sure I like the idea of not being able to buy just the refills for this.  I just can't see wasting a perfectly good handle.  They would be great for on trips though.  These sell for around $7.49 so it's a little pricey for a disposable but remember you are getting a lot more bells and whistles.  I personally know if I wait long enough I can get a good refillable razor for the same price but if there isn't any sales going on this is a better price.

Disclaimer:  I received this product for free from Bzz Agent but all opinions are my own.

Storytime Sunday

The Little Guitar
by Eric Manos
Illustrated by Eva Serencisova

"The Little Guitar" is about a little guitar who is built with care by a loving craftsman.  He put a lot of effort into her and in return she played beautiful music.  She loved when people wanted to play her so she always helped them play their best, even playing beautiful notes when they didn't play it quite right.

Everything was going great for the little guitar when she was purchased by a man to be given to his teenage son as a present.  He was wanting to learn how to play.  The little guitar was so hopeful but things didn't go so well and she ended up forgotten.  At first she was in the closet getting banged and bruised, then she ended up in the attic.

Things did get better in the end.  An older man, who used to be a woodworker who loved to play guitar, came to the yard sale that the people were having and got the little guitar for free because nobody wanted her.  The man took her home, fixed her up, and she was again able to play her beautiful music.

I thought the book was very well written.  It was much better than I had originally expected.  I love when authors put personalities to inanimate objects so that children can relate to them.  I also love the lesson in this story.  No matter how banged up and bruised we get, if you find the right friend they can help put you back together.

I read this book to my 7 year old son and 14 year old daughter.  My daughter thought it was O.K. and my son said it was "Good, I guess".

This would be a good book for kids of all ages (I'd say up to around 10 or so).  The story moves smoothly though I would really have liked to have seen a little more about when the guitar was happy in the beginning.  The pictures are cute and really go well with the story.  All in all, a good read.

"The Little Guitar" is published by Dorrance Publishing Co. Inc. and can be purchased by going here.

Disclaimer:  I received this book for free from Dorrance Publishing Co, Inc. in return for my review.  All opinions are my own.

Yay For Popcorn!!

Okay so we are doing the "Week Of Popcorn" thanking Orville Redenbacher and "The Dish" for sending us our free sample!!!   Anyway for Thrifty Thursday we were thinking we could use popcorn as the filling in beanbags for the kiddos to play games with.  You could easily make a gameboard by using a a sheet of plywood or a cardboard box and cutting holes in it and labeling them each with a different number of points.

You could also make your own ice packs using unpopped kernels.  Just place them in a freezer bag (or make your own cloth bag) and place the bag with the kernels in it in your freezer for a few hours.  This works better than ice cubes because it won't melt and you can refreeze the kernels and use them again and again.  Just leave ice pack in the freezer when you aren't using it that way it will be ready when you need it.

And there's always the classic maraca, you can use any kind of container (leftover plastic Easter eggs work well, make sure to tape them shut) put in a small handful of kernels and you're good to go.

Orville Redenbacher’s Ready-to-Eat Gourmet Popcorn

Recently we got a chance to test Orville Redenbacher's Ready-to-Eat Gourmet Popcorn.  It's the great taste of Orville Redenbacher in the convenience of an already popped bag.  Which works out nicely for all you folks like Mommy in GA who refuses to purchase a microwave.

We were really surprised to see that it comes in 4 different flavors (Sharp White Cheddar, Signature BBQ, Classic Kettle Korn, and Farmhouse Cheddar).  Farmhouse Cheddar is the one we both received to try.  Mommy in GA's 7 year old daughter said, and I quote that it is "Amazing".  and her 6 year old daughter said "I don't like it...I love it"!  Mommy in GA and Mommy in PA both agree that the flavor tastes more real than some of the other popcorn flavors we have tried over the years.  The only ones in Mommy in PA's house that didn't like the popcorn are the ones that just don't like popcorn in general.

We both also liked the packaging.  It is extremely eye-catching and there would be no way our kids would miss it on the shelf.

Right on the bag it states that it is "30% larger and fluffier than the leading ready to eat savory popcorn" and they aren't kidding.  We couldn't believe the size of the popped kernels.  And every piece is well-coated with the flavoring.

Last but not least we really like the fact that it is also healthy for us and our families, with the popcorn being 100% whole grain.  And Orville Redenbacher's Ready-to-Eat Gourmet Popcorn also has zero grams of trans fat per serving.  So tasty...and healthy!  We can't wait to try the other flavors!

Disclaimer:  We each received the product for free but all opinions are our own.

Storytime Sunday (Book Reviews)

All I See Are Stripes

By: Teresa White
All I See Are Stripes

This weeks storytime Sunday is called "All I See Are Stripes"

Written By:Teresa White And Illustrated by: Olivia White and Andrew Lovell.

This book can be purchased from Dorrance Publishing Co by following this link here!!

Mommy in Ga says:  I read this story to my 3 youngest children and the little girl i baby-sit the other day and told them to pay attention because i wanted them to tell me what they thought of the story too!!  My 6 year old actually picked this book out.

This story is to teach children about not being afraid of people that are different than yourself.....to quote my 7 year old daughter "It doesn't matter how you look on the outside, It matters how you are on the inside."   (yes i am one proud momma!!!)

The story is about a horse named misty who lives on a farm, in the words of every child we know, she was BORED!!  She did the same things everyday.  She has seen many different kinds of horses since living on the farm but, one day a very different "horse" came to live on the farm with them.  This "horse" was different because he had striped and Misty did not know what to think about that.  Zack ate, walked and ran the same as her (sometimes a little different than her) but, when he talked she could not understand him, the way he looked and talked were different than her and so this made her nervous.

Misty spent so much time worrying that his stripes were contagious and wondering why he couldn't just talk like her that it took her a long time to really get to know him....he is not a horse at all.........he is a Zebra!!!

This is a well worded book to teach your children that being different is not a bad thing and i loved the illustration as well....Our family enjoyed and i think y'all will too!!!

the 9 year old girl i baby-sit said:  That was a pretty awesome book!

My 7 year old daughter said:  I t was like super awesome and it teaches you good lessons.......she mostly liked when misty learned that it was not nice to judge people.  the thing she liked least about this book was When she judged the zebra in the beginning.

My 6 year old daughter said:  Good...(she gave me the thumbs up lol)  her favorite part was seeing the picture of the farm that misty lives on.  Her least favorite part was that sometimes misty was mean

My 2 year old said: Well he did not say much, but he really enjoyed the drawn illustration in the book!!

This book was provided to me for free by dorrance publishing co in exchange for my review, which was only written by the opinions of myself and the kids!!

Wind Down Weekend

This weekend we will be focusing on relaxing.  One of the best gifts you can give your man for Father's Day is YOU being in a great mood.  And what better way to get into a great mood then being surrounded by great scents.

Mommy in PA says:   I recently got a chance to sample a handful of products from Senteur Exotics and have been very happy to test and retest all of them.  My family also helped me evaluate the products so I'll be putting in their opinions also.

We'll start with their line of candles.  All of their candles are hand poured and all of the container candles are made from natural kosher soy wax and natural oil blends.   I received samples of "Thunderstorm" and " Botanical Garden".  The "Thunderstorm" candle was our favorite product out of all the products we tried.  With everyone totally loving it except for my husband.  "Botanical Garden" was a hit with everyone except me, it just smelled too much like pineapple for my liking.  Both candles performed well and I could definitely see myself lighting them in the evenings while settling down with a good book.  The candles are very easy on the budget too.  4 oz. tins are $5, 7 oz. jars are $10 and the 14 oz. jars are $15.

The next product I would like to discuss is the Body Scrubs.  I received a sample of "Orange A Peel" and one of "Honey Almond Kiss".  These were so much nicer smelling and rinsed off so much better than the brands I've tried in the past.  I also liked how the "Orange A Peel" one had actual orange seeds inside.  It really gave it the exotic touch.  The only one of us who didn't like the "Orange A Peel" one was my 14 year old daughter.  The only one who didn't like the "Honey Almond Kiss" was me.  I guess I'm just not a big fan of almond scent.  The body scrubs come in six different scents and are $10 for an 8 oz. jar.

The next product that I received samples of was the Body Lotion.  Let me tell you, these lotions are divine.  I love how quickly they absorb into the skin and made it feel instantly softer.  We got to try "Mango Tango", "Eucalyptus Spearmint", and "Honey Almond Kiss".  Everyone loved the "Mango Tango", it just smells so good.  We all liked the "Eucalyptus Spearmint" except for my husband.  It's just a really nice, light mint scent which has this addictive property where you sniff it and then just have to sniff it again.  Now the "Honey Almond Kiss" everyone like but me...again ( I just can't get myself to like the almond smell....).  Lotions are $13.50 for 8 oz. bottle.

Now last but certainly not least is the Body Wash.  We received samples of "OOH La Lavender", "Bergamot Grapefruit", and "Orange A Peel".  I made a huge mistake with letting my 7 year old son be the first to try out the body wash.  He used almost half of our one samples because he liked it so much.  I couldn't get over how much suds it produced.  I had always been one to assume that organic/natural products wouldn't produce as much suds as store bought stuff...boy was I wrong.  I loved the lather and the body wash seemed to have a very soothing feel to it.  We all liked the "OOH La Lavender" Not so much for the "Bergamot Grapefruit" or the "Orange A Peel".  There is another thing I really like about the body washes,  when you go to the site they also have soap with the cool looking seeds and stuff in them, very exotic.  Body washes are $13.50 for an 8 oz. bottle and the soaps are $5 for a 5 oz. bar.

Senteur Exotics are made from natural/organic ingredients so you know you are getting great quality products that are good for you and good for the planet. Not to mention the scents are spectacular.  Be sure to head over to the Senteur Exotics website and sign up for their email list for your special free gift offer.

Disclaimer:  I received the products above for free but all opinions are my own.

Thrifty Thursday

Well we got ourselves one of those easy set pools last summer and we didn't get it put away like we planned and it ended up sitting outside over winter.  Well we started setting it up and we noticed it had a couple of holes in it.  We tried the patch kit that came with it but the sealing stuff was dried out and wouldn't stick right.
Well my son had been watching "MythBusters" on tv the one evening, the episode where they were on an isolated island and had to survive with what was there and a pretty good size supply of "Duct Tape".  They actually made a boat out of it and it worked.  Well that gave us the bright idea to try it on the pool and it has been holding up well now for 4 days with no leaking.  We made sure we got the blue duct tape so it would blend in with the bottom better.
We would recommend only using it on the bottom, it probably will not hold well on the sides.  I will update you all later on how this holds up over the course of the summer.
