"Susie's Hope"

Based on a true story, "Susie's Hope" shows us how one woman's attack from a pit bull leads to the passing of a law in North Carolina called "Susie's Law" which passed stricter punishment on animal abusers.

Donna Lawrence had a soft spot for animals, including the pit bull in her neighbor's back yard.  Donna (pregnant at the time) and her friend sneak into the neighbor's yard to feed and water the pit bull after Donna noticed it had no food or water.  Well a few days later Donna returns, but this time she is alone...what happens next leaves Donna struggling for her life and suffering a loss like no other...

Awhile after the incident, Donna and her friend go for a walk in the park and hear kids screaming.  They go to see what is wrong and find what appears to be a dead pit bull-mix puppy, with burns all over its body.  Donna's friend calls the police and they come to take away the dead animal but while they are waiting Donna realizes that the puppy is still alive.

They take the puppy to a local vet who tells them that her chances of surviving are very slim but that it is possible.  The cost of all of the procedures and return care visits will cost around $17,000 so Donna and her friend go on a local tv station to spread the word about the beaten, abused, and burned puppy.  The vets office gets phone calls from people wanting to donate money to their cause.  The tv station also asks its viewers to help find the person that was so cruel to the puppy.

After Susie's surgery, Donna ends up taking Susie home.  Donna and Susie heal together.  And eventually the person responsible for Susie's abuse is found and thanks to "Susie's Law" there are stricter punishments for animal abuse.

Mommy in GA: This is a great movie to draw awareness to a huge problem everywhere! The fact that this is based on a true story and is drawing attention to the animal abuse that is wider than most people think is great.

I watched this one alone as my kids' are pretty small and I wasn't sure how graphic it would be.  It is an emotional way to get the point across and I think it was put together really well.

Mommy in PA:  I really enjoyed learning about how Donna and Susie helped in passing "Susie's Law".  I am really surprised that I had never heard of this story before the movie.  I think this is a great way for people to help spread awareness of issues.

Another thing I liked is that the cast were not a bunch of no-namers like you tend to see in awareness videos.  They were actually stars from other movies like The Twilight:  Breaking Dawn Saga: Part 2, Ender's Game, and Remember the Titans.  I think that this really helps to get more people involved to do their part.

I would not recommend this for smaller children as there are some pretty gruesome images during the dog attack scene and seeing the "burned puppy" may be disturbing to some children.

I watched it with my 16 year old daughter and she also liked the story itself but didn't care for the robotic looking puppy they used for the burn scenes, she thought they could have done a little better job making it look more real : )  The real puppy was really cute though.
